The proposal introduces a high quality, contemporary residence in Berkshire on a unique lakeside site, surrounded by established protected ancient woodland. Use of materials that reflect the landscape character, ensuring the proposal both preserves and enhances the local character and setting, has been of paramount importance to the development.

The design concept is the result of working within pre-determined clearances within the site, set between the natural enclosures and restraints formed by the landscape characteristics. The lake form has been a key generator in terms of built mass, leading to the elongated plan; resulting in two principle façades of differing visual and physical permeability, whilst all the while allowing an acute awareness of and interaction with the surrounding landscape from within the dwelling.

The elegant roof form reflects the notion of tree canopy, together with the conceptual form of a boat hull. The sculptural roof forms are wrapped with crisp standing seam copper finish – a material that is robust & hardwearing yet equally susceptible to natural processes, aging gradually forming a patina of copper oxide.

The internal configuration of spaces is generous, and offers flexibility of use to ensure adaptability of spaces over time. The proposals allow for accessible open plan living, include a lift, and locate the majority of key habitable spaces over a simple internal arrangement of rooms. The projecting roof canopy provides extensive solar shading and protection from the elements throughout the year.

Externally, detailed bespoke stonework forms a notional of protective enclosed ‘husk’ to north western aspects, whilst opening out completely to the south east overlooking the lake.
